One of the most difficult sites that environmental professionals must deal with are sites which are contaminated with chlorinated solvents. Chlorinated solvents were compounds that worked extremely well in many industrial and commercial operations. Two of the prime uses of chlorinated solvents were Tetrachloroethene (PCE) used most commonly as a dry-cleaning solvent and Trichloroethene (TCE), used in a plethora of commercial operations ranging from industrial vapor degreasers to spray cleaner in local gasoline stations, to waterproofing shoe sprays.
Remediation may also be complex and may involve several phases rather than the selection of a sole methodology. Successful remediation will depend on effective delineation of the source or sources, the physio-chemical composition of the soil or water and the biological effectiveness of degradation, if any.
This course is designed to familiarize attendees with the various problems caused by chlorinated solvents: the difficulties encountered in attempting to delineate contaminated soil and water; and the process by which one may select a method or methods to successfully remediate chlorinated solvent contaminated sites.

This course will focus on commonly used surface and downhole geophysical methods that are used to characterize the shallow subsurface. The associated instrumentation, data processing methods, and interpretation techniques used to detect geologic targets and buried man-made features will be discussed.
Topics to be Discussed in Near Surface Geophysical Methods Include:
- Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)
- Electromagnetics (EM)
- Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT)
- Seismic (Refraction, Multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW)
- Utility Locating
Topics to be Discussed in Downhole Geophysical Methods Include:
- Heat Pulse Flowmeter (HPFM)
- Optical/Acoustic Televiewer (OTV/ATV)
- Full Waveform Sonic (FWS)
- Three Arm Caliper (CAL)
- Formation Resistivity (FMR)
- Fluid Resistivity (FLR)
- Natural Gamma (NG) Measurements.
The significance of each of these measurements will then be discussed and applied to the real world through a series of practical case studies. Strengths and weaknesses of these geophysical methods and measurements will be discussed in order to provide students with a broader perspective on the applications of geophysics as they relate to their respective fields. Questions are highly encouraged and will be addressed during this lecture.

Simon, Editor-in-Chief, Remediation Journal will provide the latest insights based on a comprehensive review of what is happening across the country in various states and at a national level.
In addition, we will hear directly from representatives of NJDEP, PADEP and US EPA on up to date regulatory developments. If you are becoming UST certified for the first time or if your certification is in need of renewal, this class is for you! Stay current with New Jersey’s UST regulatory requirements and help your company and clients avoid costly penalties and fines.
The New Jersey Underground Storage Tank (UST) regulations (NJAC 7:14B Subchapter 13 & 16) require that all personnel who install, close, test, and design corrosion protection systems for regulated USTs be certified as well as those subsurface evaluators (SSE) who perform services on unregulated USTs (UHOT). All owners/operators of regulated USTs who are persons responsible for remediation must retain the services of a Licensed Site Remediation Professional (LSRP) as of May 7, 2012.
The NJDEP requires professionals who work on USTs to be trained, certified/recertified every three (3) years. This NJDEP approved course fulfills the NJDEP course requirement for regulatory training and must be taken within one year prior to renewal. Professional engineers and plumbing contractors, exempt from the certification examination, must attend the course within one year of certification.This program is provided in collaboration with Continuing Professional Education Services, LLC (CPES).
